Fairfax County is considering changes to its Accessory Living Unit (ALU) rules that could affect Great Falls’ semi-rural character, wells, septic systems, roads, and tree canopy. Staff proposes removing the owner-occupancy requirement, relaxing parking rules, and allowing detached ALUs by right on lots as small as 36,000 square feet (about 0.83 acre), down from the current two acres.
In a GFCA survey, 71% of participating residents favored keeping current ALU standards. GFCA has asked the Board of Supervisors to retain owner-occupancy, off-street parking, and site-specific review of detached ALUs in semi-rural districts.
Speaking at this hearing is a direct way to explain how these changes could affect your property and neighborhood. Check the County’s meeting information for speaker registration, location confirmation, and any schedule changes.
