Environment & Parks Committee Spring Sapling Giveaway

  • 13 Apr 2019
  • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Great Falls Library, Rear Parking Lot, 9830 Georgetown Pike

GFCA will give away free native tree saplings to residents of Great Falls on a first come, first serve basis until they are gone. Limit of six saplings per family.

The available saplings will include a variety of large and small native trees and shrubs with varying sunlight requirements and varying soil moisture requirements. Featured will be two shrubs that can help counter erosion: red twig dog-wood and spicebush. A fruit-bearing tree, the paw paw, and a nut-bearing bush, the hazelnut, will also be available. A favorite blooming tree, the redbud, will be offered, along with saplings that grow into large deciduous trees: white oak, sugar maple and black gum. Virginia pines will round out the selection.

GFCA’s tree giveaway is being held in conjunction with Fairfax ReLeaf, an independent non-profit volunteer organization that conserves, restores and promotes sustainable urban forests in Northern Virginia.
