Riverbend Park Public Master Plan
February 21, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Location: Great Falls Grange
Fairfax County Park Authority has scheduled a special public meeting to initiate plans to revise the 1975 Master Plan for Riverbend Park.  FCPA describes the current core mission as:  “Riverbend Park is a nature preserve managed to protect the biological communities and cultural resources of the Potomac Gorge, while providing a natural space for education, research and outdoor recreation that is compatible with preservation goals.”

The meeting will feature a presentation about the park’s existing conditions, the planning process, followed by an informal moderated public discussion session to identify community concerns, answer questions, and receive suggestions for future park features. After input is received, FCPA staff will prepare a revised 2012 draft master plan which will be presented to the public on its website and via a second public meeting to be held later in 2012.

Draft Long-Range Plan for Great
Falls
- Possibilities
The GFCA Long Range Planning Committee has prepared a conceptual long-range plan for Great Falls to generate community discussion and develop ideas for a viable master plan so that the community will become a better place to live, work and play. The preliminary draft plan included concepts for the central commercial area, Walker Road and Georgetown Pike transportation changes, underground utilities, and funding for a possible new community and performing arts center.  The ideas were compiled by the GFCA Long Range Planning Committee and have not been approved by GFCA or other organizations. Aging In Place:  Call for Volunteers,
Ideas to Make Proposed Great Falls
Senior Center a Reality
GFCA’s Seniors Task Team is seeking ideas and volunteers for a senior center tailored for the residents of Great Falls.   The future center, which will be formed by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, will not have a physical location, but rather will be modeled on the successful Center Without Walls in the Burke/Springfield area.  In April 2011, GFCA hosted a town meeting to introduce Great Falls seniors to the range of services available to them and to canvass residents about their most pressing needs.  A combination of attendee participation and the results of a formal survey revealed that the three strongest areas of interest are:

- Transportation for doctors’ appointments, visits
with friends or shopping;
- Alternative housing for seniors burdened with too
much house or land; and
- Opportunities for regular companionship.

The GFCA Seniors Group is interested in partnering with all local community organizations with the interest and capacity to help make this Senior Center a reality.  Some of the organizations involved include the Ecumenical Council of Great Falls, SHARE of McLean and Great Falls, individual churches, and various Great Falls non-profit organizations.  Examples of this proposed partnership include Meals on Wheels for transportation needs, SHARE for food drives, and social events for seniors at Great Falls religious, commercial, and public facilities.  The Senior Group also welcomes any individuals or private organizations willing to donate their time and expertise to the cause of keeping Great Falls seniors “in place” as an essential part of our community.

The team is seeking seniors who would benefit from the new center, as well as caregivers and volunteers.  Please contact Sondra Taylor at (703) 759-6204 so that you can be involved in creating the new Great Falls Senior Center.
