AGENDA

  • Report on January 22 Meeting with VDOT (Route 7 Widening Project)
  • Local Road Repairs and Improvements — Project List

Continuation of the discussion concerning proposed short- and long-term local improvement projects to be referred to the GFCA board for endorsement and then Fairfax County for consideration and funding.

  1. Draft letter – Georgetown Pike
  2. Previously suggested: Springvale Road median; Springvale Road right turn lane; Seneca Road stormwater management (see Transportation’s blog for additional details: http://gfca.org/Sys/Login?ReturnUrl=%2fTransportation-News )
  3. New suggestions: Arnon Chapel Road repaving; Springvale Road tree removal
  4. Other?
  • Long-term Vision and Objectives

Discussion of a vision statement for our local roads and objectives to achieve this vision. For example, the vision statement might be: Roads and streets should be designed, managed and maintained in a way so as to ensure the semi-rural character of Great Falls. Objectives might be to:

  1. redirect commuter traffic around, not through, Great Falls;
  2. facilitate access for Great Falls residents to points outside the community;
  3. encourage use of mass transit; and
  4. facilitate and manage traffic between Loudoun County and points east and north
  5. advance pedestrian and bike facilities

Preliminary discussion of: (i) broader reaching projects that may support the vision and stated objectives, and (ii) steps that might be taken to advance these projects with elected representatives as well as state and county officials.

  • Other Local Transportation Projects and Issues?

VDOT/FCDOT PROJECT UPDATES

Georgetown Pike Repaving: Status unchanged. Work has been suspended during the winter since it is now too cold to place asphalt.

Georgetown Pike/Old Dominion Drive Intersection: On January 6, the National Park Service (NPS) issued a press release announcing a proposed increase in entrance fees. This measure will generate needed revenue for projects that have direct connections and benefits to park visitors. The change may also help to reduce processing time at the entrance gate and the frequency of traffic backups since the pass period will be longer, i.e. 7 days instead of 3.  Visitors who visit the park more frequently may also realize the cost savings in purchasing an annual pass for $30 rather than a 7-day pass for $15. The NPS online public comment period ends February 5, 2015.

Riva Ridge Drive: Supervisor Foust’s office is waiting for a formal letter from the president of the Lockmeade HOA requesting an engineering review and traffic calming study.

Route 7 Widening — Jarrett Valley Drive to Reston AvenueVDOT’s consultants have reviewed Transportation’s letter of December 16, 2014 and have submitted their comments to VDOT for its review. VDOT is currently preparing its response. On January 22 representatives from the Transportation Committee met with the VDOT project team to discuss the current status of the project and discuss their plan for public outreach.

A meeting with the Route 7 Widening Project Working Group and one or more public meetings on the project are being planned.

Route 7 Widening — Rolling Holly to Reston Avenue): Construction of the new westbound lanes is underway. Note — Woody’s Golf Range Rezoning: There appears to be no currently expressed community opposition or concerns regarding the proposed application (largely because access to the proposed neighborhood would be from Sugarland Road, not Route 7). The new road opposite Redberry Court will not be used. LUZ will continue to actively monitor the situation but will not host further public hearings on the topic.

Seneca Road: Status unchanged. Preliminary plans for the proposed commercial development at the corner of Georgetown Pike and Seneca are still pending.

Springvale Road: Status unchanged.

Springvale Road Bridge Back-ups: VDOT has indicated that widening the bridge to support two-way traffic may need to be revisited. Further discussion and broader community outreach is needed.

Springvale Road Bridge Noise: Residents living closest to the bridge have voiced concerns about noise and vibration issues. VDOT continues to monitor the situation and has undertaken measures to address the problems.

Walker Road Bridge Replacement: Status unchanged. A public meeting will be held in 2015. Funding for design and construction will then need to be requested by VDOT.

Walker Road Island Landscaping:  BF Saul to be approached about landscaping the grass islands created in conjunction with the Walker Road “Diet” project.
