Whereas, historic two-lane Georgetown Pike is Virginia’s first Scenic By-Way, has steep hills and curves, and is not suitable as a major regional commuter road;
Whereas
, the current flow of traffic on Georgetown Pike has nearly doubled in the past five years and is excessive for the natural configuration of the road and already presents substantial danger to Great Falls village pedestrians and to vehicles turning into it from local intersecting roads;
Whereas, Fairfax County, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and federal agencies, with the strong support of both Great Falls and McLean citizens, have zoned and legislated the Georgetown Pike corridor as a low-density residential area and preserved its environmental character;
Whereas, current traffic plans for northern Virginia have not considered the full safety and congestion impacts that increased traffic on Georgetown Pike will have on the communities, citizens, and taxpayers of Great Falls and McLean;
Whereas, Leesburg Pike/Rt. 7, which continues to receive major improvements, is the natural and logical commuter and commercial traffic road in Northern Virginia between Leesburg, Tyson’s Corner, and Interstate 495 & 66, around and to D.C.;
Whereas, there is an urgent need for the implementation of traffic safety and calming actions for the benefit of local and through traffic, vehicles entering Georgetown Pike from intersecting roads, pedestrians, and community residents;

Therefore, the undersigned citizens
hereby petition that:
GEORGETOWN PIKE/RT. 193: Our
Virginia public officials and VDOT
complete comprehensive (not preliminary)
studies, followed by 2009-11 financing and
implementation, resulting in enhanced
safety and traffic calming improvements

along Georgetown Pike, consistent with its
historic status as a two-lane scenic byway,
Virginia's first such road; its existing
aesthetic character and recommendations
in the 1999 Georgetown Pike Traffic
Calming Study relative to signage on the
Pike and to changes to Walker Road just
south of the Walker Road/Georgetown
Pike intersection. Immediate measures
needed now include traffic controls at
appropriate intersections on the Pike to
promote safety and provide enhanced
access to the Pike for Great Falls
residents; safe pedestrian crossings;
warning signals and/or other appropriate
traffic calming measures to slow traffic
along Georgetown Pike and Walker Road,
particularly through the Great Falls Village
Center area; and speed limit
enforcement."
LEESBURG PIKE/RT. 7: Our Virginia
public officials and VDOT should
immediately redesign plans and speed
financing to improve Leesburg Pike and
enhance safety by: hastening completion
of all improvements between Fairfax
County Parkway and Dulles-DC Access
Road; eliminate the proposed two-lane left
turn from Rt. 7 onto Georgetown Pike; and
take into account the planned second/new
shopping center at Rt. 7/Rt. 193/Seneca
Rd.
